Welcome to the GALAH Rural and Regional Photography Awards. The purpose of these awards is to support emerging and established photographers in rural and regional Australia.
The theme for our inaugural 2021 awards is 'A Portrait of the Bush.' We're encouraging broad and diverse interpretations of this theme (don't be limited by a literal interpretation of the word 'portrait').
To be eligible, entrants must live and work in rural or regional Australia and the entry must have been taken in rural or regional Australia. For the purposes of these awards, ‘regional’ is defined as being areas outside of Australian capital cities.
There are five categories for the awards (see below) and entries are free. You may enter up to 5 photos, but you may choose only one category for each photo. For example, you could have 5 landscape entries, or 2 landscape entries and 3 portraits, but you can’t enter the same photo in both the landscape and portrait categories.
To enter, please ensure you have read the eligibility criteria and then click on the category links below and complete a form for each entry. Please note, each entry must be accompanied by a maximum of 300 words describing the photo and its location.

Each of the categories will be judged by GALAH's Annabelle Hickson (Editor-in Chief) and Sarah Barrett (Managing Director and Picture Editor) and one external judge. The shortlist from each category will then be finalists for the overall ‘Portrait of the bush’ award. There will be one winner chosen from the finalists by the entire panel of judges.
- Annabelle Hickson and Sarah Barrett
- Georgie Mann (Landscape category)
- Pip Farquharson (Streetscape and architecture category)
- Hugh Stewart (Portrait category)
- Luisa Brimble (Food and produce category)
- Kara Rosenlund and Clancy Paine (Lifestyle category)
- Interpretation of the theme
- Technical excellence
Finalist entries will be exhibited at Hugh Stewart’s gallery, Halls Lane Gallery in Woollahra, Sydney in late 2021. They may also be selected for a future GALAH book ‘A portrait of the bush.’ to be published in 2022.
When reviewing all entries, GALAH will also consider whether any entries may be suitable to be offered as prints on galahpress.com. All profits from the sale of these prints will flow back to the photographer.
The Winner of the inaugural GALAH Rural and Regional Photography Awards will be promoted across all GALAH channels and will receive mentoring (online) by a judge of their choice.
